How to Find Senior Support Services in Your Community

by Angela Sanchez

As we age, our needs change—but so do the resources available to support us. From transportation and healthcare to social opportunities and housing help, senior support services can dramatically improve quality of life.

Yet many older adults and their families don’t know where to begin when it comes to finding trusted, local help.

As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®), I work closely with older adults and their loved ones in San Antonio who are navigating transitions, making plans, or simply looking for ways to live more comfortably and confidently. Whether you're considering a move or looking to age in place, knowing what resources are out there is key.

Here’s how to find the senior support you need—right in your own community.

🧭 1. Start with Your Local Area Agency on Aging

One of the best starting points is your Area Agency on Aging (AAA). Every region in the U.S. has one, and they serve as a central hub for senior-related resources.

They can connect you with:

  • Home care and meal delivery services

  • Transportation options

  • Medicare and benefits counseling

  • Caregiver support programs

  • Legal assistance

  • Adult day programs

➡️ San Antonio & Bexar County residents: Visit Alamo Area Agency on Aging for local resources.

🏠 2. Talk to a Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (That’s Me!)

As an SRES®, my work goes far beyond real estate. I’m connected to a network of trusted professionals and senior-focused service providers in the San Antonio area, including:

  • Estate planning attorneys

  • Elder law specialists

  • Rightsizing and decluttering experts

  • Senior move managers

  • Assisted living and senior community advisors

When you're ready to make a change—or even just exploring options—I can point you in the right direction with no pressure and no obligation.

🧑‍⚕️ 3. Ask Your Healthcare Providers

Your doctor, home health nurse, or physical therapist likely knows about services designed for seniors. They can often recommend:

  • In-home medical care

  • Fall prevention programs

  • Chronic disease support groups

  • Occupational or physical therapy options

  • Mental health or grief counseling

➡️ Tip: Be honest about what’s becoming difficult. The more your healthcare team knows, the more help they can offer.

💬 4. Join Local Senior Centers or Faith-Based Groups

Senior centers are more than just social clubs—they often host:

  • Wellness programs

  • Fitness and balance classes

  • Meal services

  • Resource fairs

  • Volunteer and job opportunities for seniors

Churches and community centers also often have outreach programs for older adults, including transportation help, companionship visits, or emergency resources.

📱 5. Use Online Tools & Hotlines

There are several trusted websites designed specifically to help older adults and caregivers find services:

  • Eldercare Locator (eldercare.acl.gov) – A free national resource

  • AARP's Local Resources Tool

  • 211.org – Just dial 2-1-1 to speak with someone who can guide you to local services

➡️ Tip: Beware of scams. If you're unsure whether something is legitimate, reach out to someone you trust or ask me to take a look.

💡 A Note for Adult Children & Caregivers

If you’re helping a loved one, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Sometimes just knowing where to turn can lift a huge weight off your shoulders.

I’ve worked with many families who felt overwhelmed at first—but once they found the right support, everything felt more manageable. I’m here to help you find that peace of mind, too.

You Deserve Support—Let’s Find It Together!

Whether you’re just starting to explore your options, planning for the future, or helping a loved one today, you don’t have to go it alone. The right resources can make all the difference.
